Social Security January 2027 calendar: the dates of the first checks with the 3.6% COLA for every group

January 2027 will be the month in which almost all Social Security beneficiaries see the 3.6% COLA in their bank account. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has already set the dates, and some groups will receive the January money before the year ends.

January 2027 payment dates

  • Thursday, December 31, 2026 | SSI for January, because January 1 is New Year’s Day.
  • Thursday, December 31, 2026 | beneficiaries since before May 1997 and those who receive SSI and Social Security, because January 3 falls on a Sunday.
  • Wednesday, January 13, 2027 | birthdays from the 1st to the 10th.
  • Wednesday, January 20, 2027 | birthdays from the 11th to the 20th.
  • Wednesday, January 27, 2027 | birthdays from the 21st to the 31st.

No SSI payment in January

Since the January payment is deposited on December 31, SSI recipients will not receive any deposit during January 2027. The next payment will arrive on Monday, February 1. Something similar happens in November, when the SSI money arrives early, on October 30, as we explained in our article about the two SSI payments in October.

How much each group will receive

  • Average retired worker | $2,170 a month.
  • Average disabled worker | $1,701 a month.
  • Aged widow or widower | $2,005 a month.
  • SSI, individual | up to $1,029 a month.
  • SSI, couple | up to $1,544 a month.

Other changes that start in January

The new earnings test limits, the new value of each work credit and the new Medicare Part B premium will also take effect in January. The latter will determine the net amount of the check, so the final deposit may be somewhat lower than the gross increase.

The December dates, including the two SSI deposits, are in our December 2026 calendar.
