It is the fourth Wednesday of August, the last slot in the agency’s birth-date calendar. According to SSA’s Monthly Statistical Snapshot for July 2026, the average retired-worker benefit stands at $2,085.98 a month, while the highest possible retirement check in 2026 is $5,181.

Who is being paid today

SSA does not pay everyone at once. Retirement and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries are sorted into three groups by day of birth, each with its own Wednesday:

Born on the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday.

Born on the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday.

Born on the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday, which is today.

Two groups sit outside that grid. People who began receiving benefits before May 1997, and people who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), are paid on the 3rd of each month; they were paid on August 3. SSI on its own is paid on the 1st, and because August 1 fell on a Saturday the August SSI money went out early, on Friday, July 31. That is to say, there is no SSI payment dated in August at all.

How much is arriving

The figures already include the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that took effect in January 2026, worth about $56 a month for the average retiree, as set out in SSA’s 2026 COLA fact sheet. Disabled workers receive an average of $1,635.27 a month, and there are 6.99 million of them on the SSDI rolls.

The maximum depends entirely on when a person claimed: $2,969 a month at 62, $4,152 at full retirement age and $5,181 at 70. Very few people reach the top figure, since it requires a long career at or above the taxable maximum plus a decision to delay claiming until 70.

If nothing has arrived

The payment is dated today, but the money becomes visible when the receiving bank or credit union posts it, which is why two people scheduled on the same date do not always see the deposit at the same hour. It is worth remembering that federal payments have been moving to electronic delivery since Executive Order 14247, signed March 25, 2025, with SSA saying it is completing the transition during 2026 and Treasury hardship waivers still available.

If the deposit is genuinely missing, the account details on file with SSA are the first thing to check. The agency’s own performance data show the national 800-number answered about 99% of calls in July 2026, with an average speed of answer of 0.6 minutes. Even so, an SSA Office of the Inspector General report dated December 22, 2025 found that the published wait-time metric understates what callers actually experience.

The next payment dates

Tuesday, September 1: SSI, on its regular date.

Thursday, September 3: pre-May-1997 beneficiaries and people receiving both Social Security and SSI.

Wednesday, September 9: birthdays from the 1st to the 10th.

Wednesday, September 16: birthdays from the 11th to the 20th.

Wednesday, September 23: birthdays from the 21st to the 31st.

The rule that governs the exceptions is stated plainly by the agency: “If your regularly scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal public holiday, benefits will be paid the business day before your due date.” The full schedule is published on SSA’s payment calendar page. Looking further ahead, the 2027 COLA is expected to be announced on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, alongside the September CPI-W release.

Social Security pays its final August deposit today, August 26, to beneficiaries born 21st-31st.
