It is the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that millions of retirees in the United States had been waiting for, and it is the largest increase in four years.

The raise reaches about 76 million Americans, including retirees, disability beneficiaries, survivors and people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI). For the average retired worker, the increase means roughly $75 more each month.

How much retirees will receive in 2027

According to the SSA fact sheet, the average monthly benefit for all retired workers goes from $2,095 to $2,170 once the 3.6% COLA is applied. These are the main estimated amounts for retirees:

Retired worker | from $2,095 to $2,170 a month.

Aged couple, both receiving benefits | from $3,238 to $3,355 a month.

Aged widow or widower living alone | from $1,936 to $2,005 a month.

The COLA is calculated with the CPI-W (Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers). The government compares the average of July, August and September of 2026 with the same three months of 2025. That average reached 328.746, compared with 317.265 a year earlier, which is the 3.6% increase. Back in August, projections already pointed to a 3.6% COLA, and the final figure matched them.

When the increase will reach retirees

Retirees will not see the extra money in October, November or December. The 3.6% raise applies to benefits payable for January 2027, so the first larger Social Security checks arrive in January according to the usual calendar:

Wednesday, January 13, 2027 | birthdays from the 1st to the 10th.

Wednesday, January 20, 2027 | birthdays from the 11th to the 20th.

Wednesday, January 27, 2027 | birthdays from the 21st to the 31st.

Those who started receiving benefits before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI, will get their January payment on Thursday, December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a federal holiday and January 3 falls on a Sunday.

Retirees do not need to apply

One of the questions that comes up every year is whether the increase must be requested. The answer is no. The COLA is applied automatically to every beneficiary. The SSA will send a notice with the new amount in December, and people with a my Social Security account can see it online earlier.

Retirees should keep in mind that the final amount deposited may be somewhat lower than expected if they have Medicare Part B deducted from their check, since the 2027 premium has not been announced yet. In any case, the 3.6% COLA is higher than the 2.8% of 2026 and the 2.5% of 2025, and it gives retirees some relief from the rise in prices.

Meanwhile, October payments continue as normal. After the deposit on Wednesday, October 14 for birthdays between the 1st and the 10th, the next group gets paid on Wednesday, October 21.

SSA confirmed a 3.6% COLA for 2027.
