The average monthly check for disabled workers goes from $1,642 to $1,701 in 2027.

In addition to the increase in benefits, the SSA updated the earnings thresholds that affect disability beneficiaries who work. These figures are key for anyone who wants to keep their benefit while earning some income.

How much SSDI will pay in 2027

These are the average amounts estimated by the SSA after the cost-of-living adjustment:

All disabled workers | from $1,642 to $1,701 a month.

Disabled worker with spouse and one or more children | from $2,970 to $3,077 a month.

Each beneficiary’s amount is different, because SSDI is calculated with the worker’s earnings history. The COLA is applied as a percentage, so those who receive more will see a bigger increase in dollars.

New work limits for disability beneficiaries

The SSA also raised the limits that determine whether a person’s work is considered substantial gainful activity (SGA):

SGA for non-blind beneficiaries | from $1,690 to $1,770 a month.

SGA for blind beneficiaries | from $2,830 to $2,950 a month.

Trial work period month | from $1,210 to $1,270 a month.

A beneficiary who earns more than the trial work threshold uses one of the nine months of the trial work period. Earning above SGA after that period can lead to the suspension of the benefit. For this reason, it is important to report earnings to the SSA every month.

When the increase arrives

The COLA applies to January 2027 benefits. SSDI beneficiaries are paid on Wednesdays depending on their birthday, so the first higher check arrives on January 13, 20 or 27. Those who started receiving benefits before May 1997 will get it on Thursday, December 31.

The rule that sets each beneficiary’s day was explained in our guide to SSDI payment dates and how your birthday sets the day. In October, the payments still pending are on Wednesday, October 21 and Wednesday, October 28.

The 3.6% COLA raises the average SSDI check from $1,642 to $1,701.
