The <strong>Social Security Administration (SSA)<\/strong> rejects most initial applications, and many of them fail because the applicant does not meet one of the <strong>basic requirements<\/strong> of the program.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike SSI, SSDI is an insurance: it is paid to workers who have contributed to Social Security through their payroll taxes. That is why the first requirement has nothing to do with health, but with <strong>work history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Work requirements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Total credits<\/strong> | generally 40 credits, 20 of them earned in the 10 years before the disability began.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Younger workers<\/strong> | need fewer credits. A worker under 24 can qualify with 6 credits earned in the three years before the disability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Value of a credit<\/strong> | $1,890 in earnings in 2026 and $1,970 in 2027.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The &#8220;recent work&#8221; test is the one that surprises many applicants. A person who stopped working more than five years before becoming disabled may have lost their insured status, even if they worked for decades.<\/p>\n<h2>Medical requirements<\/h2>\n<p>The SSA uses a strict definition of disability. The applicant must have a medical condition that <strong>prevents substantial work<\/strong> and that has lasted, or is expected to last, <strong>at least 12 months<\/strong> or result in death. Partial or short-term disability is not covered.<\/p>\n<p>Work is considered substantial when it exceeds the <strong>SGA<\/strong> limit: $1,690 a month in 2026, which will rise to <a href=\"https:\/\/tododisca.es\/en\/ssdi-2027-cola-average-1701-sga-1770\/\">$1,770 in 2027<\/a>. Some serious illnesses are processed faster through the Compassionate Allowances program, which recently added <a href=\"https:\/\/tododisca.es\/en\/social-security-adds-14-conditions-to-fast-track-disability-benefits-list\/\">14 new conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The five-month wait<\/h2>\n<p>Even after approval, SSDI does not pay for the first <strong>five full months<\/strong> of disability. And Medicare only begins after <strong>24 months<\/strong> of entitlement to benefits. Payments are made on Wednesdays depending on the beneficiary&#8217;s birthday.
