In 2027, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will raise it from $2,830 to $2,950 a month.

This limit is known as substantial gainful activity (SGA). If a beneficiary earns more than that amount, the SSA can consider that they are able to work and, after certain protections, stop paying the benefit.

SGA limits in 2027

Blind beneficiaries | from $2,830 to $2,950 a month.

Non-blind beneficiaries | from $1,690 to $1,770 a month.

Trial work month | from $1,210 to $1,270 a month, the same for everyone.

Who is considered blind

The SSA uses the definition of statutory blindness: central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye with correction, or a visual field of 20 degrees or less. People with low vision who do not meet this definition are subject to the general limit of $1,770.

Other advantages for blind beneficiaries

The SGA rule for blind people has other particularities. For beneficiaries between 55 and full retirement age, the SSA can continue paying benefits in the months in which they do not perform substantial work if the work requires skills different from those they used before. In addition, blind workers can deduct certain work expenses that are not deductible for other beneficiaries.

The trial work period also applies. During nine months, the beneficiary can test their ability to work without losing the benefit, whatever their earnings. We explained how this works in our article on the SSDI trial work period.

The rule is different in SSI

The $2,950 limit applies to SSDI. In SSI, blind recipients are not subject to the SGA test, but their earnings reduce the payment according to the program’s income rules. For blind SSI recipients, work expenses can also be excluded.

All SSDI beneficiaries will see the 3.6% COLA in January. The average check for disabled workers will rise to $1,701, as we detailed in our report on SSDI in 2027.
