The answer from the Social Security Administration (SSA) is clear: at full retirement age, the disability benefit is automatically converted into a retirement benefit.

The beneficiary does not need to file a new application, and the amount does not change because of the conversion.

When the conversion happens

The change takes place in the month the beneficiary reaches full retirement age. For people born in 1960 or later, that age is 67. For those born between 1955 and 1959, it is between 66 and two months and 66 and ten months.

Why the amount stays the same

SSDI is calculated with the same formula as the retirement benefit, as if the worker had reached full retirement age when the disability began. For this reason, a person who becomes disabled receives an amount equal to their unreduced retirement benefit, and the conversion does not reduce it.

Amount | stays the same, with the annual COLA increases.

Payment day | does not change.

Medicare | continues without interruption.

Medical reviews | end, since the SSA no longer needs to check the disability.

The end of the work limits

One of the main advantages is that, after the conversion, the beneficiary can work without any earnings limit. The SGA rules, which will set the limit at $1,770 a month in 2027, stop applying. The retirement earnings test does not apply either, because it only affects people under full retirement age.

Can the benefit increase by waiting?

Yes, but it requires a decision. A beneficiary can ask the SSA to suspend the retirement benefit after full retirement age to earn delayed retirement credits of 8% a year until age 70. During the suspension, no payments are received.

In the meantime, SSDI beneficiaries will see the 3.6% COLA in January, when the average check will rise to $1,701. The general requirements of the program were explained in our guide to SSDI requirements, and those who are about to retire can review the maximum benefit for 2027.

When an SSDI beneficiary reaches full retirement age, Social Security automatically converts the benefit into retirement benefits for the same amount.

[1
11,10,5
post-292356","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance","tag-disability-benefits","tag-retirement","tag-ssdi
["GET
