The backlog just fell to 911,000 claims

If you have applied for Social Security disability benefits and are still waiting for an answer, the latest data from the agency brings some relief. The backlog of initial disability claims fell to 911,000 at the end of fiscal year 2026, down from nearly 1.2 million at the end of fiscal 2024.

The figures were released by the Social Security Administration (SSA) on Friday, October 23. They matter for anyone filing for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) based on a disability. We explain what has changed and what it means for your claim.

How much has the backlog dropped?

According to the SSA, the number of pending initial disability claims fell by 23% in two years. That means roughly a quarter of a million fewer people are stuck at the first stage of the process compared with the end of 2024.

The agency also says the average processing time for an initial claim is 40 days shorter than in fiscal 2024, a 17% improvement. For applicants who often go months without income, those weeks can make a real difference.

What about disability hearings?

When a claim is denied, many applicants ask for a hearing before an administrative law judge. This has traditionally been the slowest step of the whole process.

The SSA reports that the average wait for a hearing dropped by 72 days compared with fiscal 2024. The agency did not publish the total number of pending hearings, so it is not possible to know how many people are still in line.

Why are claims moving faster?

The SSA credits what it calls a “digital-first” strategy. Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the changes have produced the best performance in the agency’s history, with faster service across phone lines, field offices and online tools.

Some of the numbers shared by the agency:

The average wait on the national 800 number fell to 5.6 minutes, compared with 28 minutes in fiscal 2024.

Field office wait times dropped by more than 30%.

More than 105 million people now have a registered my Social Security account.

Online transactions topped 571 million during fiscal 2026.

Disability advocates have long warned that delays push applicants into debt and, in some cases, cause them to lose their homes. A smaller backlog does not solve every problem, but it shortens the period of uncertainty.

Does this change the SSDI requirements?

No. The faster processing does not make it easier to qualify. To receive SSDI you still need enough work credits and a medical condition that prevents you from working for at least 12 months or is expected to result in death.

There is also a five-month waiting period before the first SSDI check, counted from the date the SSA decides your disability began. Once approved, beneficiaries will see the 3.6% COLA starting with their January 2027 payment, as we detailed in our article on SSDI in 2027 and the new earnings limits.

How to avoid delays in your own claim

Even with a shorter queue, missing paperwork is still one of the main reasons a claim stalls. These steps can help:

Include the names and contact details of every doctor, hospital and clinic that has treated you.

Answer any letter or form from the SSA or your state’s Disability Determination Services before the deadline.

Keep your address and phone number up to date so you do not miss requests for a medical exam.

If your claim is denied, you generally have 60 days to appeal.

You can follow the status of your application online. If you have not created one yet, it is worth opening a my Social Security account, which is also where the agency will post your 2027 benefit notice.

The SSA says pending initial disability claims dropped 23% in two years and hearing waits are 72 days shorter.
