Connecticut launches Mobile ID on November 18

Picture this: you reach the airport security line, realize your wallet is still in the car, and pull out your phone instead. For Connecticut residents, that scenario becomes possible on Wednesday, November 18, when the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) officially launches Connecticut Mobile ID.

The free app lets you carry a digital version of your driver’s license or state ID card on your smartphone. It is a big change for millions of drivers, but it comes with limits. States are moving at different speeds on licensing rules, as we saw recently with the Tennessee license renewals that are being denied. Here is what Connecticut’s new option does and does not do.

What is Connecticut Mobile ID?

Mobile ID is a secure digital credential that can be used to verify your identity and your age through a mobile device. According to the Connecticut DMV, the app will be available for free in both the Apple App Store and Google Play starting on launch day.

Governor Ned Lamont described the launch as part of the state’s push to make government services more convenient. DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera called it a major milestone for the agency.

How do you set it up?

You cannot create a Mobile ID from scratch. You will need your physical Connecticut driver’s license or state ID card to complete the setup. The basic steps are:

Download the official Connecticut Mobile ID app from your phone’s app store once it is available on November 18.

Follow the identity verification steps in the app.

Scan or enter the details of your valid physical Connecticut credential.

Only download the official version. Be wary of any website, text message or caller offering to “activate” your digital license for a fee: the service is free.

Where will it be accepted?

From day one, Connecticut Mobile ID will be accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at participating airport security checkpoints across the country. That includes Bradley International Airport and Tweed New Haven Airport.

Not every checkpoint reads digital IDs, so check before you fly. TSA keeps an updated list of participating states and airports on its digital ID page.

Businesses such as bars, stores or pharmacies may also accept it, but they are not required to. Those that do will need a compatible verification app. The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection says it will provide guidance to businesses and license holders.

When do you still need your physical card?

State officials are clear that Mobile ID is designed to complement your license, not replace it. You should keep carrying your plastic card, especially in these situations:

Traffic stops and other interactions with law enforcement. The digital version is not a substitute there.

Voting. Mobile ID cannot be used at the polls.

Businesses that do not have a verification app, which may still ask to see the card.

The phone app also does not change your license’s expiration date or renewal rules. If your card is about to expire, you still have to renew it through the DMV as usual.

What it means for drivers in other states

Connecticut joins a growing list of states offering digital licenses. If you live elsewhere, check your own DMV’s website to see whether a mobile ID exists and where it is accepted. Policies differ widely from state to state, from digital IDs to parking rules, as shown by the Miami-Dade audit that canceled thousands of disabled parking placards.

For Connecticut residents, official updates on the launch will be posted on the Connecticut DMV website.

Connecticut drivers will soon be able to carry their license on their smartphone.
