If your Nevada driver’s license or state ID card is about to expire, you have a few days left to take care of it. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will shut down all driver’s license and identification card services statewide from Friday, November 6, until 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 8.

The pause affects both DMV offices and online services, so there will be no way around it during those three days. We explain who is affected, what you will not be able to do and how to avoid a wasted trip. If you are following changes in other states, you can also see how Connecticut’s new mobile ID will work.

According to the agency, the shutdown is needed to complete ongoing technology modernization work on its computer systems. The upgrade is part of a broader effort to replace older systems that the DMV has been carrying out for several years.

The DMV has already rolled out other changes this fall. It launched a new website in September and opened its new Silverado facility in Las Vegas in October, which brings together the services that used to be offered at the Henderson and Donovan offices.

During the service freeze, Nevada residents will not be able to:

Services are scheduled to resume at 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 8. The announcement refers specifically to driver’s license and ID services, so if you need another transaction, such as a vehicle registration, check the official Nevada DMV website before you go.

The DMV is urging drivers whose credentials expire soon to complete their transactions before the downtime, or to plan their visit for after services come back online.

That matters most for a few groups:

If you fall into one of these groups, the safest option is to finish your renewal online or book an appointment for Monday, November 2, through Thursday, November 5. Expect busier offices than usual in the days right before and after the shutdown.

The DMV has not announced any automatic extension for licenses that expire between November 6 and November 8. An expired license is not valid for driving, so do not count on a grace period. If your expiration date falls inside the window, renew early or contact the DMV through its official customer service lines.

If you are going to renew anyway, it is a good moment to check whether your license is REAL ID compliant. Since May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires a REAL ID or another accepted document, such as a passport, to board domestic flights. A compliant Nevada license carries a star in the upper corner.

Getting a REAL ID requires extra paperwork, including proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number and two proofs of Nevada residency. Bring the originals, because photocopies are usually rejected.

Why is the Nevada DMV pausing license services?
