The $7,800 increase, confirmed in the agency’s 2027 fact sheet, means a smaller paycheck for people earning above the current ceiling.

Most workers won’t see any change, since their wages are already below the limit. We break down who pays more, how much it comes to and what they get in return.

What is the taxable maximum?

Social Security is funded mainly through a 6.2% payroll tax paid by the employee, with another 6.2% paid by the employer. The tax doesn’t apply to every dollar, though. Once your earnings for the year pass the ceiling, the withholding stops until January.

The SSA adjusts that ceiling each year based on the growth in national average wages. It is a separate calculation from the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), although both figures are announced at the same time in October.

How much more will you pay in 2027?

The maximum an employee can pay rises from $11,439 in 2026 to $11,922.60 in 2027. That’s $483.60 more for the year. Your own increase depends on how much you earn:

Earning $184,500 or less: no change from the new cap. You already pay 6.2% on all your wages.

Earning $190,000: about $341 more, as $5,500 of extra pay becomes taxable.

Earning $192,300 or more: the full $483.60 more.

These examples assume the same salary in both years. If you get a raise and stay under the limit, you’ll pay the usual 6.2% on the additional income.

What about the self-employed?

Self-employed workers pay both halves of the tax, a combined 12.4%. Their maximum goes from $22,878 this year to $23,845.20 in 2027, an increase of $967.20. Half of the self-employment tax can generally be deducted when calculating adjusted gross income, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Does the Medicare tax have a limit?

No. The cap only applies to Social Security. The 1.45% Medicare tax is charged on all wages, and high earners also pay an additional 0.9% above certain income thresholds, such as $200,000 for single filers.

What if you have two jobs?

Each employer withholds Social Security tax separately, without knowing what the other one paid. If your combined wages pass $192,300 in 2027, you may end up paying too much. You don’t lose that money: you can claim the excess as a credit on your federal tax return, as the IRS explains.

Do higher taxes mean a bigger benefit?

To some extent. Earnings up to the cap count toward the record used to calculate your benefit, which is why the maximum check keeps rising. The SSA puts the top benefit for someone retiring at full retirement age in 2027 at $4,188 a month, compared with $4,152 this year. Reaching that figure takes decades of earnings at or above the ceiling.

The new figures also affect workers at the other end of the scale. In 2027, it will take $1,970 in earnings to get one Social Security work credit, up from $1,890.

What should you do now?

If you’re near the ceiling, check your first paychecks of January, when withholding restarts, and adjust your budget. You can also review your full earnings history in your my Social Security account to confirm that your wages were recorded correctly.

The SSA is raising the cap on earnings subject to Social Security tax.
