Social Security’s Veterans Day shift and how much to expect

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will send its next round of monthly payments on Tuesday, November 10, one day ahead of the usual Wednesday. The change affects retirees, survivors and people on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) who were born between the 1st and the 10th of the month.

The reason is Veterans Day, which falls on Wednesday, November 11, this year. We explain who gets paid, how much a typical check is and what to do if the deposit doesn’t show up. If you want to review your own record first, here is how to use your my Social Security account before the November 18 date.

Who will receive a payment on November 10?

You should expect a deposit on Tuesday if you meet both of these conditions:

You were born on the 1st through the 10th of any month.

You started receiving benefits after April 1997.

The birthday that matters is your own, not your spouse’s, unless you collect on a spouse’s work record. In that case, the SSA generally uses the worker’s birthday.

If you started benefits before May 1997, or you collect both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your payment doesn’t follow the Wednesday schedule. Those groups were paid earlier this month, so nothing new is coming on Tuesday.

Why is the money coming early?

Banks and federal offices close on federal holidays, so a payment can’t land on Veterans Day. When a scheduled date falls on a holiday, the SSA moves the payment to the business day before it. That’s why this group gets paid on Tuesday instead of the second Wednesday of November. As we reported, there was no Social Security deposit on Wednesday, November 4, either, because November’s first Wednesday isn’t a payment day.

How much will you get?

The amount depends on your work history and the age at which you claimed. The SSA estimates that the average retired worker receives $2,095 a month and the average disabled worker receives $1,642 before the next raise. The maximum benefit for someone retiring at full retirement age is $4,152 in 2026.

This payment won’t include the 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. According to the SSA’s fact sheet, the increase raises the estimated averages to $2,170 for retired workers and $1,701 for disabled workers, but Social Security beneficiaries will see that money starting in January. People who claimed early can also expect a smaller amount, as we explained in our guide to retiring at 62 in 2026.

What if the deposit doesn’t arrive?

Don’t call the SSA first. According to the agency, you should contact your bank or financial institution because it may simply be slow to post the payment. If the money is still missing, call the SSA toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact your local office.

Keep the calendar in mind if you plan to do that. All Social Security offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, so try calling or stopping by on Tuesday or later in the week.

When are the next Social Security payments?

These are the remaining dates on the 2026 schedule for November and December:

Wednesday, November 18: birthdays from the 11th to the 20th.

Wednesday, November 25: birthdays from the 21st to the 31st.

Tuesday, December 1: SSI.

Thursday, December 3: benefits started before May 1997, or Social Security combined with SSI.

Wednesday, December 9: birthdays from the 1st to the 10th.

You can also confirm your own date on the SSA’s benefit payment schedule page, either by signing in or by calling and saying “check delivery” to the automated phone line.

The SSA will send its next round of Social Security payments a day early because of Veterans Day.
