This year, that paycheck would put you over the limit the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses to decide whether you are working too much to keep your benefits. Starting in January, it won’t.

The SSA has published its 2027 figures, and three thresholds for people who work while on disability are going up. If you have ever lost SSDI after going back to work, these are the numbers that decide it. We explain what each one means and how they fit together.

These are the new limits for 2027

According to the SSA’s 2027 fact sheet, the monthly amounts change as follows:

Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA), non-blind: $1,690 in 2026, $1,770 in 2027.

SGA, blind: $2,830 in 2026, $2,950 in 2027.

Trial Work Period month: $1,210 in 2026, $1,270 in 2027.

The increases are tied to national wage growth, so they are separate from the 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). That raise applies to the benefit itself: the SSA estimates the average disabled worker will go from $1,642 to $1,701 a month in January.

What is the Trial Work Period?

Think of it as a test run. During a Trial Work Period, you can earn any amount and keep your full SSDI check, no matter how much you make.

The SSA counts a month as a trial month when your earnings go above the threshold, which will be $1,270 next year. You get nine trial months, and they don’t have to be in a row, but they must fall within a rolling period of 60 months, or five years.

What happens after those nine months?

Once the trial months are used up, the SGA limit takes over. The agency then looks at whether your monthly earnings are above $1,770, or $2,950 if you are blind.

Here is the order of events, according to the SSA’s Red Book on work incentives:

Extended Period of Eligibility: for 36 months after the trial period, you can get a benefit for any month your earnings fall below SGA, without filing a new application.

Grace period: if your disability ceases because of work above SGA, you are still paid for that first month and the next two.

Medicare: coverage can continue for at least 93 months after the Trial Work Period ends.

That safety net is why many people who are able to try working don’t lose everything at once. If your benefits end and you later have to stop working again, there may also be a faster way back than a brand-new claim.

Does this apply to SSI too?

Only partly. The non-blind SGA amount also applies when the SSA decides whether someone is disabled for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), but the higher SGA figure for blind workers does not. And the Red Book is clear that a Trial Work Period does not exist in the SSI program. SSI has its own rules for reducing payments based on income.

What should you do if you start working?

The biggest risk is not the limit itself, but failing to report your job. Benefits paid while you were over the limit can later be treated as an overpayment that you have to repay.

Tell the SSA as soon as you start or stop working and whenever your pay changes, and keep your pay stubs. Keep in mind that the agency may subtract certain impairment-related work expenses, so a paycheck slightly above the limit doesn’t automatically end your benefits.

To plan around your deposit, you can check how SSDI payment dates are set by birthday.
