The deposit is five days away, and once it clears there is nothing else on the Social Security calendar until Supplemental Security Income arrives on Tuesday, September 1.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will issue the final payment of the month on Wednesday, August 26, five days from now, and it belongs to retirees and disability beneficiaries whose birthday falls between the 21st and the 31st of any month. According to SSA’s Monthly Statistical Snapshot for July 2026, the average retired worker was collecting $2,085.98 a month, while the maximum benefit for someone claiming at full retirement age in 2026 is $4,152.
Why the calendar runs on birth dates
Social Security does not pay everyone at once. Retirement and SSDI payments are staggered across three Wednesdays according to the day of the month the beneficiary was born: the 1st to the 10th are paid on the second Wednesday, the 11th to the 20th on the third Wednesday, and the 21st to the 31st on the fourth Wednesday. That last group is the one being paid on August 26.
Two groups sit outside the Wednesday system. People who began receiving benefits before May 1997, and people who receive both Social Security and SSI, are paid on the 3rd of each month. SSI on its own is paid on the 1st. The full schedule is set out in SSA’s 2026 payment calendar.
What August has already delivered
By the time August 26 arrives, four separate payment dates will have come and gone this month:
- Friday, July 31 — the August SSI payment, moved forward because August 1 fell on a Saturday.
- Monday, August 3 — beneficiaries who started before May 1997 and people receiving both Social Security and SSI.
- Wednesday, August 12 — birth dates from the 1st to the 10th.
- Wednesday, August 19 — birth dates from the 11th to the 20th.
The July 31 date is a consequence of a standing SSA rule, not an exception invented for this month. As the agency puts it, “if your regularly scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal public holiday, benefits will be paid the business day before your due date.” That is why there is no SSI payment dated inside August at all: the money arrived in July and covers August.
How much the August 26 check will be
The amount is personal, not universal. It depends on lifetime earnings, the age at which benefits were claimed and the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment applied in January 2026. If we look at the data, the average retired-worker benefit of $2,085.98 is the useful benchmark for most households, and the ceiling for a worker who filed exactly at full retirement age is $4,152 a month. Full retirement age is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later.
Why nothing arrives between August 26 and September
Once the fourth Wednesday is paid, the August cycle is finished. There is no fifth payment date, no top-up and no catch-up deposit. The next money to move is the regular SSI payment on Tuesday, September 1, followed by the pre-May-1997 and dual-beneficiary group on Thursday, September 3.
After that, September returns to the ordinary rhythm: Wednesday, September 9 for birth dates 1 to 10, Wednesday, September 16 for 11 to 20, and Wednesday, September 23 for 21 to 31. It is worth remembering that beneficiaries paid on August 26 are therefore looking at a four-week gap before their own next deposit.
Anyone who does not see the money on August 26 should check the deposit account first and give the bank a business day or two before contacting SSA, since the agency counts a payment as issued on its scheduled date. Beyond the calendar, the next date that matters for every beneficiary is Wednesday, October 14, when SSA is expected to announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment.
