Millions of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients across the United States will see their August benefit land in their accounts before the month even begins. Because August 1, 2026, falls on a Saturday, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is moving the payment up to Friday, July 31, 2026.
The reason is a long-standing SSA rule: when the scheduled payment date lands on a weekend or a federal holiday, the deposit is issued on the preceding business day. This is the same mechanism that governs the full Social Security payment calendar for August 2026, where the July 31 date appears as the first deposit of the cycle.
It is important to understand that this is not an extra check or a bonus. It is simply August’s SSI payment arriving early. The practical effect is that beneficiaries collect two SSI deposits in July and none during the month of August itself.
Why there is no SSI deposit in August
SSI is normally paid on the 1st of each month. When the 1st falls on a weekend, the payment shifts to the last business day of the previous month. Since August 1 is a Saturday, the money moves to July 31, leaving the calendar month of August without a dedicated SSI deposit.
This calendar quirk has already occurred several times in 2026, so recipients who budget month to month should plan accordingly and remember that the July 31 deposit is meant to cover August.
What about retirement and disability checks?
Retirement, survivor and disability beneficiaries follow a separate schedule based on birth date and enrollment history. Those payments are unaffected by the SSI shift and continue on their usual Wednesday dates through the month. Looking further ahead, benefit amounts themselves are expected to change once the 2027 Social Security COLA is announced in mid-October.
Recipients who do not see their deposit on July 31 are advised to wait one business day before contacting the SSA, as processing times can vary by bank.
